Crooked teeth are not only unsightly, but can affect your bite, speech and oral hygiene. At Meso Dental, we offer you a range of orthodontic treatments that can help improve the function of your teeth and smile.
With the help of braces, even the most severe cases of misaligned, spaced out and crowded teeth can be corrected. Our experienced dentists will be glad to help you on your journey towards a more confident and beautiful smile.
Temporary Anchorage Devices (TAD) are a small screw which is placed in your jawbone to provide an anchor point for the movement of your teeth. This helps to provide more force to shift your teeth into position.
Functional appliances are devices that help correct undesirable tooth and jaw positions. They can be either fixed or removable.
Once your braces have been removed, your teeth will have a tendency to shift back to their original positions. Ideally, retainers should be worn for life to maintain the position of your teeth after doing braces. For the first year after removing your retainers, you will need to wear your retainers at all times, except when eating or brushing your teeth. After that, retainers should be worn every night.
Your dentist will take moulds and x-rays of your teeth. Extractions may be recommended to make space for movement.
Brackets and wires will be attached to your teeth.
You will need to return for regular monthly reviews so that your dentist can monitor your progress and make adjustments when necessary.
At the end of your braces treatment, you will be issued a set of retainers to help maintain the position of your teeth.
Conventional metal braces have been used by dentists and orthodontists around the world for decades and their effectiveness has stood the test of time. If you are concerned about cost, this option is normally friendlier on your wallet compared to other orthodontic treatments. The metal wires are held in place by bands called ligatures. These ligatures come in a variety of fun colours that can be changed every month, so that you can customise the look of your braces in a way that is uniquely you.
Most patients find the discomfort associated with braces to be inconvenient, but manageable. You may experience some soreness during the first few days following bonding or adjustment of your braces. To minimise any irritation, you may apply dental wax to the braces to keep them from rubbing against the inside of your mouth. Dental wax can be requested from our clinic receptionists.
If your child has crooked teeth, we recommend that you bring them for a consultation at around the age of 7. By this age, some of the adult teeth would have begun to erupt and it is possible to identify unfavourable growth patterns (e.g., cross bites, deep bites). While early treatment may not necessarily prevent the need for comprehensive treatment later on, it may simplify future treatment or decrease the length of time spent in treatment.
Your retainers will generally be ready in 5 to 7 working days after impression taking. Vivera retainers may take longer, as they are shipped internationally.
In general, the treatment time ranges from 1 to 3 years. During this period, you will usually be required to see your dentist or orthodontist every 4 to 6 weeks. The actual duration of the treatment is dependent on the severity of the problem, how regularly you attend follow-up visits, maintaining good oral hygiene, and following your dentist’s instructions closely.
We have both Orthodontists and General Practitioners who are able to do braces and Invisalign at our clinics. Please be assured that our general practitioners are trained and experienced in performing orthodontics treatment too.
You are never too old for orthodontic treatment. Teeth sometimes continue to shift, even as we age, which can lead to misalignment. This is very common, even if you had braces earlier in life. If you are conscious about how you look with braces, you may want to consider going for the less noticeable options like Invisalign or Ceramic Braces.
Extractions of a maximum of 4 teeth may be necessary in cases of severe crowding or protrusion of teeth. However, not all patients require extractions.
If you are under 21 years old, you will have to be accompanied by your parent/guardian during the consultation. If that is not possible, they must be there during the extractions or bonding of braces appointment (whichever is earlier), to give their consent.
The durability of the retainer is dependent on your lifestyle habits and how you care for them.
Don’t worry, this is normal. The pressure that a new set of retainers applies to the teeth can make the teeth feel sore, but this should only last a few days. If the retainers continue to cause any pain or soreness after a week, please call us to book an appointment for a review.
